Lee Grant signs new contract

Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has signed a new one-year contract that will extend his stay at Old Trafford until the summer of 2022.

Grant joined as a third-choice goalkeeper on a free transfer after leaving Stoke in 2018 and has proven to be a valuable member of the training squad, even learning Spanish to speak to David de Gea and the now deceased Sergio Romero.

“I was always very, very hopeful that I could extend my stay for another year and thankfully the club has allowed me to do that,” the 38-year-old told ManUtd.com.

“I am really looking forward to the challenge of supporting the team, keeping myself going and motivating others around me for another year.

“I think it’s huge to value and enjoy your role, no matter what kind of work you have, and I’m obviously happy to have the opportunity to do so at such a wonderful club. I’m really looking forward to another year with the guys.

“Whoever has the gloves, it is up to the other guys to really push to ensure that we as a team can get the best possible results. Whether it’s David, Dean or myself, we will all push to play and happy and ready to support the player. ”

United have already signed former academy goalkeeper Tom Heaton, now 35, this summer and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still has to make a decision on whether David de Gea or Dean Henderson will be full-time number one next season.

None of the plugs will probably be content with another year sharing the starting responsibility, but it will be an incredibly tough decision for Solskjaer to make. De Gea has given the club ten years and has been extremely loyal, while Henderson carries the romance factor of being at home.
