Billy Gilmour goes to Norwich on loan

Norwich have completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan during the 2021/22 season, with the 20-year-old keen to start playing regularly in the Premier League.

Gilmour became a permanent member of the Chelsea publishing team halfway through the 2019/20 season, but the injury ended his campaign prematurely after only a handful of promising appearances. Hungary played in 11 Chelsea matches last season and impressed for Scotland at Euro 2020.

More playing time is the crucial next step for him and a statement from Chelsea stated that the move allows Gilmour to “continue his development by gaining more first-team experience in top flight.”

However, the player himself said on Norwich’s official website: “I am very happy to be here. I can not wait for the season ahead. I have been looking forward to coming here, playing as much as possible and helping Norwich City compete in the Premier League.

“I talked to the head coach [Daniel Farke] here, the player added.

“He called me and we had a nice conversation about how he wants to play and how he sees me fit in. All he said was what I want to do on the pitch, get the ball down and play good football. He talked really loud about his team and I wanted to come here and help. ”

Before their return to the Premier League after winning the championship last season, Norwich have lost a number of players from various midfield roles, with creative maestro Emi Buendia sold and Alexander Tettey, Mario Vrancic and Marco Stiepermann released.

“We are very happy to bring in Billy because we have lost some players in that area. We want to improve our options, especially in the center of the park, and for that we are happy to bring Billy, says Farke.

“We got the feeling that he can help us a lot with his ability to link the game, his technical qualities and also his work towards the ball. From a football point of view, but also from his character, he fits perfectly with our group. ”
