Jamaica hopes for nationality

Jamaica hopes to convince Manchester United’s forward Mason Greenwood to reject an international future with England and instead sign with them.

Reggae Boyz have aggressively chased players with dual nationalities to bolster their side and have recently persuaded West Ham United forward Michail Antonio to join an international team that already featured Ravel Morrison, Andre Gray and Bobby Reid.

Their next hope, according to the Telegraph, is to convince Greenwood to change sides – with a leading source in the Jamaican Football Association making it clear that the door is always open for the United kid.

Greenwood has already made an appearance for England – September 2020’s 1-0 win over Iceland – but players under the age of 21 can change teams as long as they have played less than three international matches, which means that Greenwood can still switch to Jamaica for as he is entitled by his parents.

There is no indication that Greenwood is taking Jamaica on their offer. He represented England at under 17, under 18 and under 21 before making his senior debut and becoming the seventh United player to make his England debut as a teenager.

Jamaica’s optimism, however, probably stems from Greenwood’s exodus from the England line-up. He was sent home from Iceland after breaking the COVID-19 rules with Phil Foden and has not seen a shirt in England since.

The foot was kept away in only one international window, but Greenwood had to wait longer and only returned to the fight this summer, before an injury forced him to withdraw from his provisional Euro 2020 squad without even performing.

Greenwood is the most noticed player that the Jamaican FA target group is targeting, who are looking for an impressive side before launching their campaign to qualify for the 2022 World Cup later this year.

Max Aarons, Demarai Gray, Ivan Toney, Liam Moore, Isaac Hayden, Ethan Pinnock, Mason Holgate, Rolando Aarons, Curtis Tilt, Jamal Lowe, Amari’i Bell and Kasey Palmer have all been targeted, with a handful of voters choosing to sign for Reggae Boyz.
