Fernandinho, who turned 36 last month, would be out at the end of June but will now remain a City player for at least one more season.

Since joining Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013, the Brazilian midfielder has won four Premier League titles, the FA Cup and six EFL Cups. But his latest appearance for the club was in the Champions League final defeat in 2021 against Chelsea and it is clear from his comments when he signed his new contract that elusive European glory is still the most important driving force for him.

“In my head and my mind, the job is not done yet, so I decided to stay here another year and try to help the team and the club achieve the goals they were looking for,” Fernandinho told ManCity. com

“In my opinion, we can do it, there are still places to improve and achieve these goals. And obviously for me and my family, it’s a pleasure to stay in Manchester for another year.

“If I can continue to do the same and lead them onto the field, off the field, to help them get better and better and perform better during the games, I would be the happiest person there,” he added.

Football manager Txiki Begiristain said: “He is our captain, our leader and it is a position he has excelled in. There are a number of talented young players in our group and therefore it is important that we have someone with Fernandinho’s knowledge. and experience. ”
