Alvaro Morata reveals threats to his family

Spain’s forward Alvaro Morata has revealed the horrific messages he has sent after his subordinate performances at Euro 2020 so far, and some are even threatening his family.

The Spaniard has struggled to find the net in this summer’s tournament and has only picked up a single goal in his three games and spurred a lot of clear chances.

Morata failed to convert a penalty in Spain’s 5-0 win over Slovakia on Tuesday, although his performance against Poland – ironically the only game he has played in – saw him face too much criticism.

The forward admitted that his performances at Euro 2020 have not been at the level he expects of himself, but after revealing the extent of the terrible messages he received after games, he says that people should put themselves in his shoes before sending such heinous abuse.

“I’m not doing my job well,” he told Spanish radio station Cope (via Football Italia). “I went nine hours without sleep after Poland. I have received threats, insults to the family and say” we hope your children will die “. But I feel good, maybe a few years ago I would have been much worse. Maybe I did not my job as I should.

“I understand that you are criticizing me for not scoring, but people should take my place, understand what it means to be threatened, to say that your children must die. When a tragedy occurs, they will say he was a good guy. ”

Although she could ignore the messages he was sent, Morata added that the abuse is not limited to social media and that his family has been abused while watching Spain’s games.

“When I arrive at the hotel, I put away my phone, but what bothers me is that they say these things to my wife and children in the arena,” he added.

Morata went on to reveal that he regularly talks to the national team therapist and that it has been a great help for him to be able to open up to the abuse he receives.

“It helps us a lot, it’s great to have someone listening to you when you need them,” he said. “My teammates make fun of me for this, but luckily I can talk about it with him.”
