How to watch TV (UK / US) and livestream

The death squad will end on Wednesday when Portugal and France face one of the top two places in Group F.

France are at the top of the group, and a win for Didier Deschamp’s men would be good enough to seal that place, but defeat could cause them to drop to third if Germany can have a positive result against Hungary.

For Portugal, just one point would be enough to get them through the knockout stages, but a loss could lead to their elimination if results from other groups go against them.

Here is everything you need to know about this.

Portugal remain without injured duo Joao Felix (thighs) and Nuno Mendes (hoarding), with the latter absence means another start for Raphael Guerreiro despite his own goal in the 4-2 defeat against Germany.

There could be a handful of changes in the team after that game, the most likely being the inclusion of LOSC Lille midfielder Renato Sanches, who could replace one of either Danilo Pereira or William Carvalho to give his side a little extra spark.

Dembele is out of the tournament / Aurelien Meunier / Getty Images

Ousmane Dembele has left the camp and returned to Barcelona after his knee injury was considered serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the tournament, so his role on the bench will now be given to someone else.

That is the only concern for Deschamps, who has the opportunity – if he so wishes – to rotate his squad after securing a place in the knockout stages.

Portugal: Patio; Semedo, Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro; Pereira, Sanches; Bernardo Silva, Fernandes, Rafa Silva; Ronaldo.

France: Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Lucas; Kante, Pogba, Tolisso, Griezmann; Mbappe, Benzema.

The history books are almost entirely in France’s favor for this one. Of its 27 previous meetings, Les Blues have selected victories no less than 19 times, with Portugal winning just six and holding France to a draw on two occasions.

The two sides met in the Nations League at the end of 2020, and it was France who last laughed. They made it 0-0 in October before Deschamp’s men beat them 1-0 a few weeks later.

The meeting before that? Oh yes, it was the final of the European Championship 2016, where your overtime winner gave Portugal a memorable title victory.

As the only side that have not yet lost a game in the group, you have to say that France will come into this as favorites, and they will feel somewhat confident after seeing Portugal be pumped 4-2 by Germany last time.

That being said, France has not yet set fire to the world this summer. They were not very impressive when they were held by Hungary in their last match and needed an own goal to scrape past Germany. There is a sense of vulnerability around them.

Portugal need the points here more than France, so expect Fernando Santos’ side to go for it, but it’s still France we’re talking about. They do not have to be in elite form to win matches.

Prediction: Portugal 1-2 France
