Libya’s Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) will hold a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland from June 28 to July 1, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said on Sunday.
The personal meeting is an opportunity for members of the LPDF to develop proposals to further facilitate the conduct of national elections on December 24, in particular the constitutional basis for voting, UNSMIL said in a statement.
Ahead of the meeting, the LPDF Advisory Committee will be convened from 24-26 June in Tunisia for a preparatory meeting to facilitate plenary sessions by developing practical mechanisms that can drive discussions forward but also build consensus and make decisions, the statement said.
The statement also said that Jan Kubis, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Libya and Head of UNSMIL, renewed his call on all parties involved, including LPDF members, the House of Representatives and the Prime Minister, to respond to the ambitions of the Libyan people and to work to quickly complete the constitutional basis and legal framework for the election.
The Advisory Committee was established on 17 December 2020, based on a roadmap approved by the LPDF, and consists of 18 members tasked with following the constitutional path of Libya’s roadmap.
Libya has recently witnessed a positive development following a breakthrough in which rival parties agreed on 5 February on a unified new executive that will govern Libya ahead of the national elections on 24 December.
Libyans hope the new government will end years of civil war that have plagued the country since the death and killing of strongman Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.
