IKEA Is Recalling Thousands of These Popular Kitchen Items After

There are 52 IKEA locations in 26 states across the U.S., and hundreds of thousands of products are sold in stores and online every day. If you’ve purchased certain kitchenware from the retailer anytime between August 2019 and May 2021, anyone who uses it could be at risk.

IKEA has issued a recall of 148,000 plates, bowls, and mugs because they could become brittle and break, according to an announcement posted on its website. If this happens when hot food or liquid is in one of the recalled products, it could pose a burn hazard. Multiple injuries have been reported, per the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

IKEA is aware of 123 reports of breakage worldwide, including four reports of injuries, two of which required medical attention. Most of the injuries were burns due to hot contents leaking out. This includes one incident, without injury, in the United States.

The HEROISK and TALRIKA sets are made from PLA (polylactic acid or polylactide) material that could break. The HEROISK plates, bowls, and mugs are sold in two-packs, while the TALRIKA bowls, plates, and mugs are sold in packs of four. Both have a supplier number of 23348, as well as Made in Taiwan and PLA molded to the bottom. They cost between $4 and $12.

IKEA says anyone with a product should “please return it to any IKEA store for a full refund,” and “proof of purchase (receipt) is not required.”
