The best WSL goals ever
During its opening decade, the Women’s Super League treated us to a number of spectacular goals.
Whether you prefer solo efforts, cheeky chips or long-range rockets, WSL has been kind to target lovers of all stripes.
With so many strikes to choose from, limiting a top ten is not an easy task. Here in 90 minutes, however, we love a challenge almost as much as we love a world champion. So without further ado, here they are – the top 10 goals in WSL history. So far, still …
When accurate exact free kick routines are not released, you tend to look stupid – in fact, very stupid.
But in the rare occasions that exercise makes perfect, they can be a beauty. Ellen White proved this in 2015 and ended this misleading routine with a nice finish against the former club Arsenal already in 2015.
Icelandic midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir did not do much during her spell in England, but when she did, they were usually quite special.
The choice of the gang came against Bristol Academy in 2013 where she released an arrow driver who cut off the underside of the bar on the way in.
We had many Toni Duggan goals to choose from for this list. In the end, however, we chose her perfect run against Bristol Academy 2015.
It was one of six goals that the striker managed during the WSL season with 14 games.
This bouncing ball called to be thrown and Lynda Shepherd was happy to force and released a fiery strike that flew into the roof of the Doncaster Rovers Belles net.
That was the only goal she scored for Liverpool, what way to remember, huh?
You may remember a viral clip of Fara Williams lobbying the goalkeeper from the start while playing for Reading.
What you may not have known is that Williams has the past and repeated the trick for Liverpool a few years earlier. While Birmingham were still celebrating their equalizer, England legend saw an opportunity to cut one over goalkeeper Becky Spencer – and she made no mistake.
Chelsea 3-3 Manchester City was one of the very best WSL games, with lots of momentum shifts and memorable moments.
The choice of goal was made by Beth England who took the ball in half turn and finished clinically from 25-yards.
While the majority of our list consists of thunderclap, this goal required a defter-touch.
Judging her run perfectly, Natalia blocked a ball over the top and lifted it over the rushing goalkeeper on the volley. What a shame it was just a consolation strike in a 3-1 defeat.
After entering their meeting with Arsenal, Manchester City had not tasted a home defeat in almost two years.
This remarkable drive ended when Jordan Nobbs made a free kick from an unlikely interval. With the right mix of tempo, dive and swing, it is the best scene in WSL history.
Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Arsenal was one of the best matches of the 2020 WSL season.
A big reason for this was Sophie Ingle’s miracle. To take a bouncing clearance, the defender showed maximum control over his body to throw the ball in the upper corner of the bounce.
Caroline Weir is synonymous with fantastic goals but no one has been better than her match-winning strike in the Manchester Derby 2020.
Weirs played in front of a packed Etihad Stadium, and Weir’s left-footed arrowhead was deservedly nominated for a Puskas award and eventually lost Son Heung-min’s solo run against Burnley.
