Ould Abdel Aziz sufferer of a scheme
Lawyers for former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz condemned Thursday night at a news conference in Nouakchott what they consider to be a violation of their client’s constitutional rights.
as reported from Nouakchott, Salem Mejbour Salem
The lawyers, who held their first press conference since the indictment of the former head of state on March 11 for corruption and money laundering, protested against the Mauritanian authorities’ refusal to allow Ould Abdel Aziz to go to his hometown in the interior of the country. Aziz, according to his lawyers, is the victim of a political settlement of scores.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who ruled Mauritania between 2008 and 2019, is placed under judicial control along with a dozen of his former staff, including two former prime ministers. Their passports were confiscated and they have to check in three times a week at the police station closest to their respective residences.
The lawyers tried unsuccessfully to get permission to leave the city of Nouakchott for the former president of Mauritania. Last week, the prosecution compiled a list of ten charges including corruption, decay, embezzlement of public property and money laundering.
Accusations without evidence according to the attorney general, Master Ichidou. “We chose a fact-based legal approach from the start. The charges, however, are led by the prosecution without evidence. Of course, we condemn public action against the former head of state. To us, his indictment is a clear violation of Article 93 of the Mauritanian Constitution. ”
Master Ichidou goes further when he condemns a political settlement. “For us, this is clear. Our client is the subject of a political scoreboard and his problems have started since he tried to take over the leadership of the ruling party. We are doing everything to neutralize it politically. “
Under the leadership of the Union for the Republic, it is recalled that the reference of the Power Party has always been the President.
