The UN accuses France of obstructing the investigation

In a letter to the French authorities, a copy of which Mediapart and the Guardian had, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions accuses the French army of obstructing the UN investigation into the murders of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon in Mali. And condemns “troubled gray areas”.

In his letter of 30 pages sent to the French authorities and by whichMediapart and the Guardian could get a copy, Agnès Callamard does not hook words. Seven years after the assassinations of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon near Kidal, the UN Special Rapporteur first claims that the French army is abusing the rules of defense secrecy to prevent investigators from establishing the truth. Agnès Callamard condemns an obstacle to judicial inquiry and a breach of international law.

She also evokes the “initial lies” from the French authorities. Reference specifically to the way in which former President François Hollande and former head of the DGSE Bernard Bajolet has varied in his statements. Both had initially acknowledged the existence of an interception between an alleged sponsor and a kidnapper of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon before returning to their comments during their questioning of the judge.

“Rehabilitation” by Seidane Ag Hitta

In her letter, Agnès Callamard is also interested in the fate of Seidane Ag Hitta, the alleged sponsor of the murder. The man reappeared in connection with the release of four hostages, including French Sophie Pétronin, in October last year. Ag Hitta participated in the negotiations. Photos testify to this.

Agnès Callamard condemns what constitutes for her “a progressive rehabilitation” of the brain from the double murder of the two RFI journalists. All the more so, she adds, because this man served directly or indirectly as a conversation partner for France. When asked by Mediapart on this subject, Élysée simply replied that the negotiations were carried out only by the Malian authorities.

Many of the UN rapporteur’s statements were included in a survey conducted by RFI and was published in July 2019. Today, a UN report hammers these claims loud and clear.
