In Dakar, an official ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 29 to launch the next Fespaco, which will take place from October 16 to 23 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Senegal is the guest of honor at the 27th edition of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival. Originally scheduled for February, this major cultural event has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite the health and safety context, the organizers want “a great professional and popular party”. On the poster for the 27th edition of Fespaco, signed by the artist Christophe Sawadogo, Princess Yennenga, the heroine of Burkina Faso, sits on her stallion. “A message of grounding and openness”, according to Abdoulaye Diop, Senegalese Minister of Culture.
“Burkina Faso and Senegal have excellent relations from all points of view,” he continues. We have signed co-production and film collaboration agreements. Fespaco will be an excellent platform to promote this collaboration and this new policy to revive the cinema. ”
“New perspectives, new challenges”
A collaboration praised by Foniyama Elise Ilboudo Thombiano, Burkinabè Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism: “We chose Senegal for several reasons, including the desire to highlight the dynamism of the Senegalese film industry and promote the exchange of experiences.”
The theme of this new edition: “Cinemas from Africa and the diaspora, new perspectives, new challenges”. The health crisis is one of them, as is the security context. “Our country, aware of the crises that the sub-region and the world are going through, is organizing the necessary arrangements for a successful Fespaco,” the minister continued.
This year, 1132 films are registered according to the general delegate for Fespaco Alex Moussa Sawadogo. A record which, according to him, is a sign of “the dynamics of African film”.
