It has been hitting the country for a few weeks. President Yoweri Museveni spoke on Sunday evening, in particular to announce the closure of schools and the ban on travel between different districts. Objective: to stop this multiplication of the number of cases of coronavirus.

as reported from Kampala, Lucie Mouillaud

For President Yoweri Museveni, new restrictions are needed to limit the increase in Covid-19 cases in the country. In two weeks, more than 8,000 cases have been registered in Uganda, a record since the pandemic began.

“The intensity of the number of serious cases and deaths is greater than what we experienced during the first wave of the pandemic. During the first wave, we had reached the figures we have today of three or four months, while this time it took less than two weeks. “

To control this new wave, the head of state has decided for a period of 42 days to close schools, ban travel between districts, as well as public and cultural gatherings or prayers in churches and mosques. Measures that can be further strengthened if they are not respected.

“The application of these new measures depends not only on the police but also on public transport officials, entrepreneurs and each of us. If these measures are not followed within a week, I would introduce total containment, he said.

Over the past week, controls on existing restrictions have been tightened: last weekend, more than 2,000 people were arrested for non-compliance with the curfew.
