Macky Sall’s speech to the nation lacked room, according to the Senegalese opposition, which expected stronger messages. Nothing in the political crisis that shook the country after the legal case that involved the political opponent Ousmane Sonko.

as reported from Dakar, Thea Ollivier

In a speech to the nation held ahead of Senegal’s Independence Day on April 4, President Macky Sall rolled out his roadmap for youth. Among the promises: 450 billion CFA francs over three years for employment and socio-economic integration of young people and the allocation of 80 billion CFA francs to encourage the recruitment of 65,000 young people.

In the Medina district, where some traces of the demonstrations in early March are still visible, is Oumar Ndiaye, a student. He had taken to the streets. Annoyed today, he did not follow Macky Hall’s speech. “Politicians give repeated speeches. And today young people are tired of hearing that kind of speech. They are always promises. We do not see this funding with our own eyes …”, he condemns.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, one of the founders of the opposition party Pastef-Les Patriotes, is disappointed that the president has not clarified his position in the third term. “It is an opportunity that he unfortunately still misses. There are things he should have done [comme] the issue of compensation to victims and their families. It is disappointing that he is still not able to clearly identify where the problem lies and take appropriate action. It would also be very reductive to think that what happened recently is simply due to economic problems. ”

However, a young leader of the Alliance for the Republic, the presidential party, Omar Dieng, says he is pleased with Macky Sall’s speech and expects a lot from the announced measures. If he thinks the tone was right, he regrets that the president did not explain himself in the election calendar, while the local elections were postponed again.
