Letby, hailing from Hereford, is currently serving 15 life sentences after being convicted for the tragic murders of seven infants and the attempted murders of another seven, which occurred between June 2015 and June 2016.
The police are actively pursuing inquiries into possible corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Following Letby’s conviction, the investigation expanded to assess if individual leaders might be held accountable for gross negligence as well.
“This focuses on senior leadership and their decision-making processes to evaluate whether any criminality has arisen in response to the alarming rise in fatalities,” stated Mr. Hughes.
He also mentioned that in March, the investigation’s scope broadened to include gross negligence manslaughter, emphasizing that this is a distinct offense based on the severe negligence of individuals.
“It is important to note that this does not impact the convictions of Lucy Letby for multiple offenses of murder and attempted murder,” he clarified.
On June 30, police arrested three senior leaders from the Countess of Chester Hospital, who were in their positions during the critical years of 2015 to 2016, on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. These individuals have since been released on police bail while further inquiries are conducted.
Mr. Hughes reiterated that both corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter investigations are ongoing. “There are no established timelines for these investigations,” he noted.
Furthermore, “our investigation into the deaths and non-fatal collapses of infants at the neonatal units of the Countess of Chester Hospital and the Liverpool Women’s Hospital from 2012 to 2016 is also still in progress,” he added.
