Green Climate Fund Allocates $100 million for Somalia’s Ambitious Climate Initiative
Mogadishu (AX) – On a momentous Tuesday at its 40th meeting, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) embraced a $100 million endeavor aimed at boosting Somalia’s efforts against climate chaos through the “Climate Resilient Agriculture in Somalia” (FP246) project.

Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, flanked by fellow government representatives, hailed the GCF’s backing. Minister Khadija hailed the move as a pivotal stride in strengthening Somalia’s agricultural defense against erratic climate swings.
Applauding the speedy go-ahead, she deemed it one of the swiftest green-lit initiatives by GCF, marking a milestone as Somalia’s heftiest solo climate finance project so far. “Today, we etched history with the approval of our inaugural single-country project—among the quickest ever sanctioned,” Minister Khadija exclaimed, showering GCF Executive Director Mafalda Duarte with accolades for speeding up the process. The Minister highlighted the necessity of accessing both vertical and horizontal climate funding to morph climate pledges into real-world solutions.
This colossal $100 million venture aims to galvanize climate-ready farming programs, a lifeline for Somalia, given its high climate change susceptibility. Despite accounting for a mere 0.03% of global emissions, Somalia endures harsh climate repercussions, like brutal droughts that claimed over 43,000 lives and uprooted more than six million folks in 2022.
Back in March 2024, Mafalda Duarte, leading the first GCF delegation to Somalia, heralded this $100 million collaboration to hasten climate action. An additional USD 7 million will further bolster the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change over the forthcoming year.
Known as FP246 or “Ugbaad,” this initiative strives to fortify Somalia’s rural circles and ecosystems against climate’s unpredictable tantrums.
Steering a vast financial vessel, the Green Climate Fund stands as the globe’s most substantial climate-centric financier, navigating over 250 undertakings worth a whopping $13.9 billion, offering climate-focused fixes to more than 129 evolving nations.
