In Senegal, a series broadcast on social networks is still controversial. This time it is Cirque Noir, whose trailer was released last week, and which was the subject of a complaint from the Islamic NGO Jamra.
as reported from Dakar,Thea Ollivier
It’s a first. The producers, screenwriters and actors of the series “Black Circus” were arrested this Monday, August 16, then six of them were prosecuted last Tuesday, following the complaint from the Islamic NGO Jamra – common because-, for indecent abuse, public contempt and dissemination of images contrary to good morals. A case that sparked a debate in the country.
Disputes are usually handled by the National Council for the Regulation of the Audiovisual, but this time the series “Black Circus” is spread only on social networks and not on television. So the NGO had to turn to the police’s cybercrime department to lodge a complaint on Wednesday 11 August.
“Perversion” vs. creative
His motivation? pictures and comments are considered pornographic according to Mame Mactar Gueye, vice president of Jamra. He takes as an example a scene where a woman takes off to go with a man in her bed. A scene that jeopardizes “socio-cultural values” and “children’s mental and moral health”, according to him.
On social networks, this case created debate. On the one hand, shocked Internet users condemn a series of “perversions” that “trivialize sexuality.” On the other hand, some defend the freedom to create artists, while Senegalese comics are regularly attacked.
