Choguel Maïga has met ECOWAS and promises

Following talks on Tuesday, June 8, with the new President of the Malian Transition, Assimi Goïta, ECOWAS met with representatives of the African Union and the United Nations on Wednesday morning with the new Prime Minister Choguel Maïga. In particular on the program: the development of consultations on the formation of an inclusive government.

Choguel Maïgaa said, all smiles, at the end of this two-hour meeting, that on Sunday, in agreement with the President of the transition, he will present his new Malian government.

He also said that discussions with political parties and civil society organizations have developed well. If he admits the possibility of some difficulties in the arbitration proceedings, he is hopeful of forming a government with broad consensus.

He also promised that a new plan and timeline would be presented to the National Transitional Council, the legislative body that serves as the National Assembly in Mali, within six weeks. Time is running out for a team that has not yet been set up, too Choguel Maïga also confirmed that the transition he wants to be successful will take place according to schedule with an end expected in nine months.

Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of the ECOWAS Commission, welcomed these guarantees. For him, ECOWAS will support the Malian transition and is reassured by the various consultations carried out by his delegation.

On the question of whether Mali’s suspension within the subregional organization will be lifted, he explains that this decision will be taken by the Heads of State and conditioned by the progress of Malia’s transition.
