The BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, saw leaders issue a comprehensive declaration on crucial matters, including UN reform and global strife.

There were a total of 134 provisions listed; one focused on transforming the United Nations.

“We reiterate our endorsement of a full-scale overhaul of the UN, especially its Security Council, aiming to enhance democracy, representation, efficacy, and efficiency,” the document declared. This move seeks to amplify the presence of developing nations to more effectively tackle global quandaries.

Moreover, the leaders strongly denounced all forms of terrorism and urged swift approval of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations.

Apart from the essential changes, BRICS members also advocated for the UN to assume an influential role in the global management of artificial intelligence.

The declaration also touched upon worldwide discord, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

“We’re perturbed by the surge in violence and ongoing armed conflicts across the globe,” shared the declaration. In response, BRICS vowed that peaceful resolutions through diplomacy remain their steadfast approach.

The leaders voiced profound concern over the tensions in the Gaza Strip, calling urgently for a ceasefire and an end to all hostilities.

They emphasized the necessity for a sovereign Palestinian state based on the accepted borders of June 1967, offering their backing for Palestine’s full-fledged membership in the UN.

Member nations recollected their individual stances on the Ukraine turmoil, lauding noteworthy proposals pointing towards diplomatic reconciliation.

The BRICS leaders also aired serious worries about the detrimental effects of illegal unilateral sanctions on the global economy, noting they stifle economic growth, energy supply, food security, and intensify poverty.

BRICS representatives urged efforts to thwart an arms race in outer space and argued for a framework fortifying space security.

The provisions encompassed various economic plans aimed at elevating the influence of developing nations in the global economy and fostering fair conditions for all.

Moreover, they argued for revamping the Bretton Woods institutions to bolster developing countries’ roles in the global marketplace.

The leaders celebrated the creation of a new BRICS investment platform, which aims to leverage the infrastructure of the New Development Bank to spur investment into BRICS states and the Global South.

They highlighted the need to restructure the international financial system to “address global financial challenges” while ensuring greater inclusivity and fairness.

Furthermore, member countries threw their weight behind Russia’s proposal for a BRICS grain exchange, suggesting this platform could expand to other agricultural sectors in the future.
