A Koran school in the state of Niger in the north-central part of the country was attacked by armed men on Sunday, May 30, 2021. The school accommodates more than 200 students and no results are yet known.

According to a statement from the local police, armed men arrived on motorcycles and attacked the Salihu Tanko Koranic school in the middle of Sunday afternoon. According to her, the attackers shot “indiscriminately and abducted an as yet unknown number of children”. According to the Nigerian government, which spoke on Twitter, many very young students, between four and twelve years old were immediately released, as they slowed down the kidnappers.

For their part, humanitarian sources confirm this version, but with caution, because according to them, no reliable information has yet been filtered through and no results are yet known. The same sources also told us that they were worried about the kidnapped security, because this kidnapping comes the day after fourteen students were released, imprisoned for 40 days in the neighboring state of Kaduna, in the center of the country. The kidnappers then began executing five children to put pressure on the families and get a ransom.

In the local press, although the authorities have confirmed the opposite, there is an amount of 180 million Naira, or more than 350,000 euros, that the families pay for their release. Since December last year, more than 700 children have been abducted under similar conditions in Nigeria.
