Villarreal Part Ways With Manager Setien Due To Disappointing Season Commencement

Villarreal coach Quique Setien has been sacked by the club due to a slow start to the season. The team lost three out of their first four games and currently sits in 15th place in the La Liga table. The announcement was made by Villarreal CF, stating that Setien is leaving the club. The club acknowledges Setien’s professionalism and commitment and thanks him and his coaching team for taking charge during a challenging situation last season.

Setien joined Villarreal in October 2022 after Unai Emery’s sudden departure to Aston Villa. He made changes by promoting young players from the academy and successfully qualified for the Europa League after finishing fifth in La Liga. However, this season has been more challenging, with home defeats against Barcelona and Real Betis, as well as a loss to Cadiz. Setien’s tenure at Barcelona was even shorter, as he was sacked after just seven months in August 2020.

Miguel Angel Tena, the Director of Football, will serve as the caretaker boss until Villarreal finds a replacement for Setien.
