In an official statement released on Tuesday, the United States revealed that this funding would be utilized for transportation and medical evacuations in support of the Somali Security Forces, aligning with the mission of UNSOS.

Shane Dixon, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu, highlighted the importance of providing robust logistical support to the Somali and ATMIS security forces as they engage in the battle against al-Shabaab. Dixon expressed pride in supporting UNSOS, a crucial partner in the pursuit of peace for both the United States and Somalia.

Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, the Head of UNSOS, emphasized the significance of this contribution, stating that it comes at a crucial time and will greatly benefit the provision of agile logistics support to the Somali Security Forces. The implementation of this support is guided by the priorities set by the Federal Government of Somalia, as mandated by the United Nations Security Council.

Meanwhile, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the leaders of the country’s security sector are presently in the Mahas district, overseeing extensive military operations aimed at liberating the states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle. President Mohamud has reaffirmed that these military operations against al-Shabab will persist until a final victory is achieved.

UNSOS plays a vital role in supporting the joint efforts of the Somali Security Forces and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in tackling al-Shabaab. Currently, UNSOS is responsible for providing specific logistical assistance to 15,900 Somali Security Forces.
