MOGADISHU, Somalia (AX) — The U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu has launched the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) in Somalia, demonstrating its commitment to advancing entrepreneurship and gender equality in the country.
AWE, a global initiative led by the U.S. Department of State, provides crucial training for women entrepreneurs, empowering them to expand their businesses and contribute significantly to their local communities.
The inaugural AWE program in Somalia consists of a carefully selected group of 30 female entrepreneurs. They will participate in the four-month Dream Builder entrepreneurship program, beginning this September. The iRise Hub Foundation, based in Somalia, will oversee the program.
Chargé d’Affaires Shane Dixon of the U.S. Embassy praised the cohort, stating, “These 30 women epitomize Somalia’s potential for a brighter future. Their dedication, innovation, and collaborative spirit embody the qualities that can lead the entire nation towards increased prosperity.”
AWE’s objective is to equip ambitious women with essential knowledge, networking opportunities, and resources to launch and expand successful businesses. This initiative directly aligns with the U.S. National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality. Additionally, AWE leverages support from public-private partners, local alliances, and U.S. Exchange Alumni networks, fostering economic growth in more than 80 countries worldwide.
