In Salama village, Lamu County, Kenya, on June 26, 2023, there was a distressing scene of women standing before a demolished house. The photograph taken by Kalume Kazungu captures the gravity of the situation.

Tragic events unfolded on Tuesday morning when a lorry driver and his co-driver fell victim to an ambush orchestrated by suspected members of the Al Shabaab extremist group. The attack occurred near Lango La Simba region along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen Road in Kenya.

According to Gabriel Kioni, the Deputy County Commissioner of Lamu West, the heavily armed militants intercepted the vehicle between the hours of 6:30 am and 7 am, resulting in the deaths of the driver and co-driver. Their throats were mercilessly slit by their assailants.

Kioni also revealed that preceding this incident, the terrorists set ablaze eight houses and a church in Salama village, located in Lamu West, during the night. These acts of destruction were accompanied by the theft of various household possessions, including televisions, solar panels, lamps, maize flour, and goats. The rampage lasted from 8:30 pm to 11 pm on Monday night.

Subsequently, the militants, estimated to number between 30 and 60, proceeded approximately 60 kilometers to Pandanguo. Here, they attempted to forcefully breach the Pandanguo General Service Unit (GSU) camp but were effectively repelled by the stationed officers.

Confirming the tragic incident, Mr. Kioni stated, “I can confirm that two individuals, a lorry driver and the co-driver, were killed this morning at Lango La Simba. Their bodies have been taken to the Mpeketoni Sub-County Hospital. Investigations are currently underway.”

Confidential sources among the local administrators informed Nation.Africa that, fortunately, no casualties were reported in Salama village, as most of the residents have sought refuge in an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp.
