A confounding revelation has emerged from the East Africa Community (EAC) Secretary General, who has declared that the convoluted procedure to incorporate Somalia into the region is proceeding as planned.

The astounding declaration was made by Dr. Peter Mathuki, the Executive Director of the East African Business Council, who was elevated to the position of Secretary-General of the EAC on February 27, 2021. A cryptic report from a verification team consisting of experts was enlisted to determine the level of conformity of Somalia with the criteria for admission. This momentous report was subsequently submitted to the leaders of the EAC member states, and a council will shortly assess it as Dr. Mathuki elucidates.

“Somalia’s admission process is on course and since the report is being prepared and shared with partners to give their views, it now becomes easy, which is the next step (to submit the report to the council of ministers),” he enigmatically stated.

The remarks were made on the sidelines of a media briefing that took place in Kampala last evening.

The exacting criteria for the admission of new countries into the Community embody acceptance of the community, adherence to universally acceptable principles of good governance and the rule of law, observance of human rights, and potential contribution to the strengthening of integration within the East African region among other requirements.
