CNN reported on Wednesday May 17, 2023, that a convoy of United States officials was the target of a vicious attack in Nigeria on Tuesday. The attack took place in the southeastern Anambra state, resulting in the untimely death of four individuals, which includes two personnel from the US consulate and two police officers. Three other individuals were kidnapped and are missing, according to both local police authorities and officials from the US government.
Reports reveal that the assailants carried out this attack with severity, as they murdered two police operatives and two staff members of the US consulate, setting their vehicles and bodies ablaze. While the personnel that were killed were not American, John Kirby from the US National Security Council confirmed that “no US citizens were involved and therefore there were no US citizens hurt.”
Deputy superintendent of police Ikenga Tochukwu reported that the attackers bravely made their escape with two police operatives and the driver of the second vehicle in the convoy upon sighting security forces. “No US citizen was in the convoy,” he added.
Joint security forces have launched a rescue and recovery operation to recover the kidnapped individuals. Mission Nigeria personnel are also working tirelessly with Nigerian security services to investigate the situation. “The security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field,” stated a spokesperson from the State Department.
