Reports in Spain claim Asensio’s agent Jorge Mendes has contacted Barcelona to explore the possibility of the 26-year-old joining the Catalan club in the summer, with the player himself denying it when given the chance.

“Honestly, I don’t know if they’ve called,” he told radio station COPE last month. “Many other clubs have been linked [with me] also. But that’s normal because in seven months, well, from January actually, I’m free to talk to other teams.

“It’s just that I haven’t thought about it [joining Barca] or considered it. Honestly, right now I can’t give you an answer. I don’t know, he added.

But speaking from Spain’s World Cup base, Asensio has tried to distance himself from those comments, as well as expressing his desire to extend his stay in Madrid.

Asked about his previous comments about Barcelona, Asensio said: “They were interpreted in many ways. I just said I was comfortable at Real Madrid.

“There is talk that I am changing Real Madrid’s mind, but I have always tried to give the best I have. The one who decides is also the club, it is not only up to me.

“After the World Cup we will both make a decision. What if I want to renew? Hopefully it can happen and I will be very happy at Real Madrid for many years. Hopefully everything will be given to stay for another 10 years”
