Houston Dynamo sign Brazilian midfielder Artur from Columbus Crew

The Houston Dynamo have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Artur from the Columbus Crew.

Columbus will receive $300k in General Allocation Money (GAM) for the Brazilian’s services, with another $50k to come if certain performance markers are met.

“Artur is a proven winner in our league, a true competitor and a leader in the locker room,” Dynamo general manager Pat Onstad said in a club press release. “We talked about bringing in winners in the off-season and Artur embodies that mentality.

“He will be a unifying presence in the locker room and will add a more physical element to our central midfield next season. I am excited to work with Artur again and welcome him and his family to the city of Houston.”

Artur featured 156 times for the Crew in all competitions following a move from Sao Paulo in 2018, scoring four goals and providing six assists, while helping the club to the MLS Cup and Campeones Cup titles.

“I would like to thank Artur for his contributions to the Crew and the Columbus community over the past six seasons and he will always be a part of our club’s history and our recent accomplishments, which include hoisting two trophies,” Crew President and GM Tim Bezbatchenko said of the recruit.

“We believe this move will provide us with valuable flexibility as we build our roster for the 2023 season and beyond.”

Artur will now look to help the Dynamo return to the MLS Cup playoffs after finishing 13th in the Western Conference in 2022 – missing out on the postseason for the fifth straight year.

Artur’s arrival marks the latest step in Houston’s revival efforts after replacing head coach Paulo Nagamura with Ben Olsen after just one season.
