The relationship between Türkiye and Somalia is one that is steeped in history and mutual trust. Through their unwavering loyalty and gratitude, Somalis have come to regard Türkiye as an indispensable partner in their ongoing quest for peace, stability, and development. So much so, that they are eagerly anticipating the upcoming election in Türkiye to see what the future might hold.
A History of Turmoil
Somalia’s history is a complicated one, and it has not been free of struggles or challenges. After declaring independence in 1960, the country quickly became a beacon of democracy, stability, and development in Africa. However, all of that changed in 1968, when a coupe took away the democratic rights of the people. In the ensuing years, Somalia became embroiled in a devastating civil war which was characterized by intense violence, corruption, and foreign intervention. As a result, the country floundered, unable to provide its people with the basic services and stability they needed.
Türkiye as an Agent of Change
Despite the fact that Türkiye is a non-regional actor, it has been instrumental in supporting Somalia’s ongoing efforts towards stability and development. Since 2011, Türkiye has been an “irreplaceable partner” in the region, and its commitment to helping the country rebuild itself has been unwavering.
TIKA and the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) have been some of the key institutions involved in this process, working tirelessly to provide humanitarian aid to those in need, and building strong bridges between Turkey and Somalia. Meanwhile, thousands of Somali students have been welcomed into Türkiye, gaining the education and skills needed to help rebuild their country.
Perhaps most importantly of all, Türkiye has worked to establish the basic systems needed to create a functioning state in Somalia. This has included developing the health and education sectors, building new infrastructure, including airports and roads, and training a new generation of civil servants and military personnel.
Türkiye’s Contribution to World Peace
Türkiye’s efforts in Somalia and East Africa have not only contributed to regional stability, but they have also played a vital role in contributing to world peace. Through its commitment to humanitarian diplomacy, its ability to act as a deterrent against aggressors, and its assistance to allies worldwide, Türkiye has shown itself to be a true global power.
Under the leadership of President Erdogan, Türkiye has also become a shining example of democracy and exemplary leadership for Muslim countries worldwide, providing a guiding light for those seeking to build strong, stable, and free societies.
For Somalis, the continued support of Türkiye is vital in the ongoing fight against terrorism and other threats to stability. As one of the largest and most important democratic powers in the world, Türkiye has a critical role to play in helping to create a better tomorrow for all those who have been oppressed and marginalized.
As Minister of Defense of Somalia, I urge the people of Türkiye to continue their vital role as partners, friends, and advocates for peace. It is only through sustained efforts and shared determination that we can hope to create a brighter future for ourselves and all those around us.
