Mogadishu (AX) — Somalia’s top leadership joined worshippers in the capital Wednesday morning as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre attended Eid al-Adha prayers alongside government officials and hundreds of others at the Mosque of Islamic Solidarity in Mogadishu.

After the prayers, Mohamud extended holiday greetings to Somalis and offered prayers for peace, prosperity and lasting development in every part of the country.

“We will never forget to remind ourselves of the good practices that are practiced on this day,” Mohamud said. “It is important to strengthen our unity, cooperation and support within the community to achieve a peaceful and developed Somalia.”

The president said Somalia’s state-building effort has reached what he described as a historic moment, with the process now being led by Somali citizens themselves. He called on the public to deepen unity, social solidarity and support for vulnerable communities as the country continues to recover.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also delivered Eid greetings to Somalis and Muslims worldwide, describing the holiday as an occasion for mutual support, national cohesion and solidarity.

Barre praised the country’s security forces, paying special tribute to soldiers he said stand guard day and night to protect Somalia, defend unity and battle al-Shabab, which government officials frequently call Khawarij.

“I commend the Somali boys and girls who took up the uniform to ensure a peaceful and developed Somalia for their efforts and sacrifice their blood for their country,” Barre said. “I wish you a happy Eid, heroes. You are in a righteous jihad that enhances your honor.”

Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed also marked the holiday by congratulating Somalis and Muslims on Eid al-Adha and praying for national unity, peace, economic growth and political stability.

Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo sent similar messages, saying the holiday is a reminder of forgiveness, aiding the vulnerable and strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity.

Eid al-Adha, among the most significant celebrations in Islam, is observed with communal prayers, family gatherings and the sacrifice of livestock. The meat is traditionally distributed among relatives, neighbors and people in need.
