Somali Leader Reasserts Dedication to Achieving Nationwide Voting by 2026

Mogadishu (AX) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reaffirmed his commitment to reform the country’s electoral system, aiming for universal suffrage by 2026.

During a celebration of King Charles III’s birthday in Mogadishu, President Mohamud stressed the significance of democratic elections in bolstering government effectiveness and fueling national growth.

Quoting the President, “Elections are the cornerstone of democracy, built on the Somali people’s will. Our government is committed to ensuring Somalis take an active role in carving out their futures and exercising their constitutional rights to elect their leaders.”

President Mohamud also called on global ally support, emphasizing the pressing need for political stability, security, and long-lasting development throughout this critical chapter for Somalia.

Marking a monumental development, Somalia’s governing body approved a pivotal law concerning the formation and functioning of political parties. This marks a significant stride towards establishing a multi-party democracy within the country.

In an unprecedented move, at a joint parliamentary session held at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu, a whopping 177 out of 178 lawmakers threw their weight behind the proposed legislation. Just one abstained, showing no signs of dissent, as announced by the Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe.

Currently navigating through complex political waters, Somalia is keenly focused on breaking away from its past governance challenges. President Mohamud’s administration has been working on crafting a political ecosystem where citizens have greater influence over their destiny, seeking collaboration with international allies to ensure steady progress.

This crucial legislation received overwhelming support, underscoring a shared vision among Somali lawmakers for a future characterized by political inclusivity and engagement. With such reforms underway, the prospects for Somalia’s democratic evolution look promising.

Expectantly, as the nation moves toward fully realizing this vision by 2026, the roles played by both domestic stakeholders and international practices will be crucial.

President Mohamud’s vision and plans resonate not only within Somalia but also far beyond, reaching into the hearts of those around the globe who yearn for a world where democracy isn’t merely an ideal but a lived reality.
