HARGEISA — North Western State of Somalia security forces killed two suspected gunmen and arrested several others in a planned operation in the Salal region on Wednesday, days after the killing of two civilians triggered a manhunt and heightened security measures, the military said.

  • Two suspected attackers were killed; four others were wounded in the clash
  • Several suspects arrested and illegal weapons, including AK-47 rifles, seized
  • Operation conducted in the Indho-Biraale area of Salal following the recent killing of two civilians
  • Authorities say the security sweep will continue; residents urged to cooperate

In a statement, the North Western State of Somalia armed forces said troops clashed with a group accused of involvement in the earlier attack while conducting a targeted sweep in the Indho-Biraale area. The operation resulted in the deaths of two armed suspects and left four others wounded, according to the statement. Security personnel also seized illegal firearms, including AK-47 rifles.

“The operation was carefully planned and aimed at ensuring security and stability for the people of the region,” the military said, adding that several suspects were detained and would be handed to legal authorities for investigation and prosecution. Officials did not disclose how many people were arrested or provide identities of those detained or killed.

Authorities said the raid is part of a broader campaign to restore order after two civilians were killed earlier this month in Salal, an incident that prompted intensified patrols and a search for suspects. Police have not publicly identified those believed to be responsible for the civilian killings, and no details about a possible motive have been released.

The military said security operations would continue in the area with a focus on disrupting groups accused of carrying illegal weapons or engaging in activities that threaten public safety. It warned that individuals found in possession of illicit arms would face legal action.

Officials also urged residents to cooperate with the armed forces and police by sharing information on suspicious activity and refraining from actions that could undermine stability. The statement did not indicate whether any curfews or movement restrictions were in effect as part of the ongoing operation.

While authorities portrayed the sweep as a measured step to prevent further violence, they provided few details about the engagement itself, including the duration of the clash or the unit leading the operation. No additional information was immediately available on the condition of the wounded suspects or whether any security personnel were injured.

Further updates are expected as investigations proceed and detainees are transferred to legal authorities. Police have encouraged residents in Salal to report any threats or relevant information to local stations as the security effort continues.
