Hormuud Salaam Foundation backs orphan care and vulnerable families in Ramadan push
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Hormuud Salaam Foundation has provided new financial support to two community organizations in the Banadir region, donating $10,000 to Maamo Ugaaso Foundation and aiding 120 vulnerable people through the Somali Women Development Center (SWDC) as part of its Ramadan outreach and 14th annual Iftar Program.

The $10,000 grant to Maamo Ugaaso Foundation will bolster services at the center, which cares for orphaned girls and street children. The contribution is intended to secure food, shelter and stability during Ramadan for children who rely on the center’s care.
“The funds we delivered to Maamo Ugaaso are intended to support the critical work the center is doing for Somali children. We deeply appreciate those who have devoted themselves to caring for orphans and neglected children,” Deputy Chairman Abdirahman Ibrahim Ilmi (Kobac) said at the handover ceremony.
The center’s director welcomed the assistance and described the support as both timely and impactful for the children under her care.
In a separate initiative, Hormuud Salaam Foundation worked with SWDC to deliver financial assistance to 120 vulnerable people, including disadvantaged mothers, elderly individuals and people with special needs who are unable to work. SWDC Executive Director Sahra Mohamed Ahmed, joined by representatives from the African Women Leadership Network, emphasized the importance of the help amid rising costs and prolonged hardship.
Deputy Chairperson Raho Hussein Hirsi said the foundation would continue prioritizing communities hit hardest by drought and economic strain, especially during Ramadan. “As the country continues to face hardship, including the impacts of drought, we remain committed to standing with those in need. Our focus is on helping families secure iftar meals and access essential services during this sacred month,” she said.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, noting the assistance arrived at a crucial moment in the holy month.
The support forms part of Hormuud Salaam Foundation’s Iftar Program, now in its 14th year, which the foundation says reaches more than 67,000 vulnerable people each Ramadan with food and financial aid. The program’s beneficiaries include:
- Orphaned and vulnerable children
- People with disabilities
- Patients in need of care
- Prisoners
- Internally displaced persons (IDPs)
By pairing direct financial support with community partnerships, the foundation says it aims to meet immediate needs while reinforcing the local institutions that serve at-risk groups across Mogadishu and the wider Banadir region.
