CIA Director Burns Engages in Dialogue on Peace and Security with Somali President Mohamud
On Friday, CIA Director William Burns engaged in discussions with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the capital city of Mogadishu. They delved into various significant topics, particularly focusing on security and the pressing issue of terrorism.
A report from the Somali presidency described their meeting as a “high-level conversation aimed at reinforcing the longstanding strategic alliance between Somalia and the United States.”
The dialogue, according to the official statement, “addressed several mutually advantageous subjects, such as aiding the Somali Federal Government in combatting terrorism, enhancing regional stability, and tackling critical security obstacles in the Horn of Africa.”
As they wrapped up their discussions, both leaders underscored “the necessity of working together on fundamental matters relating to peace and security, reiterating their dedication to fostering stability throughout the region,” the release noted.
Burns’ visit to Somalia occurs amidst rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, sparked by Addis Ababa’s recent agreement granting the breakaway region of North Western State of Somalia access to the Red Sea. In the wake of this dispute, international players, including Türkiye, are stepping in to facilitate dialogue and offer mediation.
