Mogadishu, Somalia – In a push to professionalise Somalia’s police and bolster national stability, Minister of Internal Security Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail today inaugurated a 10-day instructor training for the Somali Police Force in Mogadishu, a programme designed to raise institutional capacity across the security sector.
Funded by the Government of Japan, the 10-day training is being conducted by the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Police at the General Kaahiye Police Training Academy as part of joint efforts to enhance the professionalism, instructional capacity, and operational effectiveness of the SPF.
The course aims to deepen the knowledge and skills of police instructors and officers, upgrade the quality of training delivered, and improve service to the public—measures officials say will contribute directly to safer communities nationwide.
Participants will receive advanced training and practical skills intended to support the standardisation and continuous improvement of police training nationwide. The initiative is also expected to be progressively expanded to regional and district police units to strengthen professionalism and institutional capacity at all levels of the police structure.
The opening ceremony drew senior figures from Somali and African Union security bodies, including the Acting Head of AUSSOM and Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC), Ambassador Mouktar Osman Karie; Gen. Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed (Garare); and AUSSOM Police Commissioner, AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu, alongside senior officials from the SPF and AUSSOM.
Also present were the Japan Project Coordinator at the Ministry of Internal Security and AUSSOM, Abdicaziz Abdirahman Yusuf; AUSSOM Police Coordinator, ACP Dr. Samuel Asiedu Okanta; the SPF Head of Planning and Training, Lt. Col. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamed; and General Kaahiye Police Training Academy Commandant, Gen. Mukhtar Gaabow Hassan.
Officials at the launch welcomed the programme, highlighting its role in strengthening policing standards, building professional competencies, and improving institutional effectiveness across Somalia’s security apparatus.
The initiative underscores ongoing cooperation between the Government of Japan, the African Union, and the Federal Government of Somalia to support peacebuilding, stabilisation and the development of capable security institutions in the country.
