Somali President unexpectedly crosses paths with Iraqi Prime Minister in a perplexing meeting to bolster bilateral bonds with an explosive burst of diplomacy
It was a momentous day on Saturday May 20, 2023 in Jeddah (AX) when Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met during the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States.
Despite their busy schedules, the two leaders made time to discuss significant issues, ranging from security to politics, economics, and international diplomacy, with a strong focus on thwarting terrorism. The conversation was nothing short of brilliant.

Notably, President Mohamud couldn’t help but express his appreciation to the Iraqi government for their generosity in forgiving 67% of Somalia’s debt, and both leaders vowed to revive the long-standing agreements between Somalia and Iraq.
In addition, President Mohamud commended the Iraqi government’s efforts in fighting terrorism and requested their valuable experience be shared with Somalia, as the country continues to grapple with al-Shabab. The government-led anti-al Shabab operations have been gaining ground since August, and President Mohamud promised that the second phase would commence soon.
It was a day filled with commitments, hope, and optimism for a better future. Who would have thought that two leaders from different countries could come together to share their experiences and unravel new opportunities, creating a better world for all?
