Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre of Somalia has expressed deep gratitude towards the government of Qatar, stating that Qatar has consistently supported the Somali people in times of need. According to Barre, Qatar has been a trusted friend and ally, providing both humanitarian aid and assistance in the country’s development. He emphasized that Somalia views Qatar not only as a partner but as a strategic ally, and aims to further strengthen and expand the existing cooperation between the two nations.

Qatar has played a crucial role in helping Somalia combat violent extremism through both financial and emotional support. In addition, Qatar has shown interest in making significant investments along Somalia’s extensive coastline, which has great economic potential that remains untapped. Barre believes that the relationship between Qatar and Somalia has made remarkable progress in recent years and that his visit further signifies their commitment to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the Arab and Islamic regions.

While Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have had competing interests in Somalia in the past, the situation has improved since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud assumed office. Both Barre and Sheikh have visited Qatar and the UAE to promote development cooperation and address political divisions. Somalia continues to fight against the extremist group Al-Shabaab, but recent efforts have resulted in territorial losses for the militants.
