Wednesday August 30, 2023
In Mogadishu, a delegation led by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre paid a visit to the command center of the Somali National Army in the Adan Yabal district of the Middle Shabelle region. This visit comes shortly after the retreat of the Somali army from four major towns and villages in central Somalia.
The main purpose of Prime Minister Barre’s visit is to provide encouragement to the army and the local population who are dedicatedly working towards eradicating the insurgency in the Galmudug and Hirshabelle regional states.
During his time in the Middle Shabelle region, the Prime Minister will conduct meetings with army commanders and regional leaders to expedite ongoing operations and provide moral support to both the army and local militia forces.
This is the second visit of Prime Minister Barre to Adan Yabal, which coincides with the recent statement made by the President of Somalia, emphasizing the importance of holding accountable those who have misused their power within the military.
According to two anonymous Somali government officials, the government troops have retreated from El Dheer, Masagaway, Gal’ad, and Budbud. This retreat followed one of the deadliest attacks by al-Shabab on Somali government forces in Cowsweyne, where the troops had initially displaced al-Shabab on August 22.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has affirmed that military operations against al-Shabab will continue until final victory is achieved.
