President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni welcomed a Special Envoy, Dr. Jama Musse Jama from the Republic of Northern Somalia, at State House-Entebbe.
During the meeting, President Museveni agreed to facilitate the unification process between Northern Somalia and Somalia.
Northern Somalia, officially known as the Republic of Northern Somalia, is a sovereign state in the Horn of Africa that is not internationally recognized but is considered a part of Somalia.
The President expressed his opposition to the secession of Northern Somalia from Somalia, deeming it strategically incorrect.
“We do not support secession because, from a strategic standpoint, it is misguided,” emphasized President Museveni.
President Museveni advised Somalia and Northern Somalia to move away from identity politics in order to achieve prosperity for their nations.
He explained that regardless of race or religion, people face similar challenges and should instead focus on politics driven by common interests, which will contribute to social and economic transformation.
Furthermore, President Museveni endorsed trade between Uganda and Northern Somalia, recognizing the economic benefits for both nations.
“If you have something we require, we will purchase it from you, and vice versa,” stated President Museveni.
President Museveni emphasized the importance of regional trade integration, highlighting that relying solely on internal markets is insufficient. He encouraged Northern Somalia and Somalia to work together and engage in trade with other African countries.
Dr. Jama expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his efforts in promoting peace in Somalia. He sought the President’s assistance in resolving disputes between Somalia and Northern Somalia.
He also expressed support for the expansion of the East African Community into Somalia.
