Thursday September 7, 2023
Jowhar (AX) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in the Aden Yabal district on Wednesday to assess the readiness of the military forces for upcoming operations in the Middle Shabelle region.
President Mohamud was warmly received by Hirshabelle President Ali Gudlawe Hussein, Somali National Army commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhyiddin, high-ranking officers of the Somali National Army, and local residents.
The reports suggest that he engaged in discussions with army commanders and officials, focusing on their preparations, strategies, and the necessary resources for the operations. Prior to his visit to Aden Yabal, Mohamud had been in the Mahas district and Dhusamareb town, where he intensified the ongoing operations. However, the Somali army encountered a setback in the Galgadud region.
The reports indicate that government troops withdrew from El Dheer, Masagaway, Gal’ad, and Budbud in the Galgadud region following a deadly al-Shabab attack on soldiers in the village of Cosweyne last week.
On Wednesday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and politicians, traditional elders, and lawmakers from the Hawadle community in the Mahas district reached an agreement to escalate military operations against militants in the Hiiraan region.
Beledweyne, situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Mogadishu, has recently emerged as the focal point of local community mobilization against al-Shabab. Local officials, including the former governor of the Hiiraan region and the current interim president of Hiiraan State, Ali Jeyte Osman, led community forces that supported the Somali government forces and successfully seized several villages from the militant group.
