Nigerian Military Leaders Express Approval Of French Army Withdrawal Announcement

Niger’s military leaders expressed their approval on Sunday at the news of the French army’s decision to withdraw from the country by the end of this year, viewing it as a significant step towards sovereignty. The affirmation followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s declaration that the French ambassador would be recalled from Niger and the military contingent would follow in the upcoming months.

“Today, we commemorate a momentous milestone in Niger’s sovereignty,” proclaimed a statement from the country’s military rulers, who took control in late July after overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

“By the end of the year, both the French troops and the French ambassador will depart from Nigerien soil.”

Delivered via national television, the statement further asserted, “This moment underscores the determination and collective will of the Nigerien people.”

Prior to Macron’s announcement, the Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation in Africa (ASECNA) announced that Niger’s military leaders had prohibited “French aircraft” from entering the country’s airspace.
