A Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer and a French Navy carrier strike group led by its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle have conducted joint exercises in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia and in the northern Arabian Sea, the Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, the exercises took place from January 9 through Saturday with the MSDF destroyer Suzutsuki – which has been deployed to the area to combat piracy – four French Navy ships and one US Navy ship.

The purpose of the exercises was to strengthen cooperation between the MSDF and the French and US navies, and procedures were confirmed to defend naval vessels from air attack.
