Memphis Depay Sustains Injury In Clash With Rayo Vallecano

Memphis Depay, who netted his second goal of the season for Atletico on Monday, was forced to leave the field due to a muscle strain at the 30-minute mark. Atletico coach Diego Simeone is relying on the upcoming international break for Depay to recuperate.

Despite making an impressive start to the season with Atletico, Depay is already facing physical issues, reminiscent of the 11 games he missed last season due to injuries. During the derby against Rayo Vallecano, the Dutch forward scored his second goal of the season, following his previous goal against Granada on Matchday 1. Unfortunately, after just 34 minutes, Depay had to be replaced by Alvaro Morata due to a muscle strain.

Simeone, in his post-match press conference, expressed his regret over Depay’s injury, acknowledging the player’s superb form. However, the coach remains optimistic about his recovery, with the international break offering ample time for recuperation. At this moment, Atletico has not provided further details regarding the extent of Depay’s injury or the duration of his absence.

As a result, it is unlikely that the former Lyon player will be able to participate in the match against bottom-placed Sevilla at Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday (6:30 pm). Furthermore, his availability for the Netherlands’ matches against Greece and Ireland is also uncertain. The Dutch national team’s qualification for Euro 2024 is currently in jeopardy, with them sitting in fourth place out of five, with just three points.
