Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan has been chosen by Germany manager Hansi Flick as the captain for the upcoming Euro 2024, which will be hosted by Germany in nine months. Gundogan, who previously captained Manchester City, will now be wearing the captain’s armband for the German national team in their friendly match against Japan in Wolfsburg.

Since goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is currently out due to a leg fracture from a skiing accident in December 2022, Flick had initially selected Joshua Kimmich as the captain for friendly matches in March and June. However, Flick believes that the leadership of Gundogan and Kimmich working together will bring a fresh energy to the team.

Gundogan expressed his delight at being chosen as the captain and considered it a great honor to lead such a young team. With the responsibility of guiding a team with a rich history of success, Gundogan understands the magnitude of his role.
