“Healthy” meals with extra sugar than a crunchy Kreme donut, he says

Sometimes healthy foods can secretly contain a lot of added sugar, and in some cases a serving can pack more than what is in a donut.

Yep, you read that right. There are 10 grams of sugar in one Original glazed donut from Krispy Kreme. According to American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that women limit their consumption of added sugar to just 25 grams (or 6 teaspoons) of added sugar per day to promote heart health. For men, it is recommended to lower your intake to 36 grams or 9 teaspoons of added sugar daily.

Below we show five specific examples of foods that are often characterized as healthy but contain more added sugar than one of the most famous donuts available. We also offer low sugar substitutes for each. After you finish reading, do not miss The Worst Fast-Food Donuts in America.

Yoghurt

Yogurt is a healthy breakfast choice, but some options seriously pack some sugar. That is not to say that these sweeter varieties should Never enjoy, but rather it is an easy suggestion to save them for dessert. For example, we love Noosa Yoghurts – they are made from high quality ingredients, have a fluffy texture and taste good. But Salted caramel chocolate the alternative, while delicious, packs 23 grams of added sugar per 5.8-ounce container — which is about the same amount of sugar found in two Original Glaze Donuts from Krispy Kreme.

Our advice? Save this decadent alternative for dessert and for breakfast, try something similar Noosa Blueberry Greek Yogurt, which has only 8 grams of added sugar per 5.3 oz. cup.

Salad dressing

Again, we do not suggest that all salad dressings should be avoided in the grocery store. Still, there are some options that we recommend that you think twice about buying if you are trying to cut down on the sweet things. For example, only two tablespoons Marzetti Light Honey French Dressing packs 11 grams of added sugar – almost the equivalent of a donut from Krispy Kreme.

If you love Marzetti, consider giving it a try Avocado Ranch or the Olive oil & vinegarboth of which contain only 1 gram of sugar or less.

Granola

There are plenty of healthy granola options out there, e.g. Rent Elizabeth and Early bird. But there are also some high quality brands that offer sweet flavors. Take Cascadian Farm for example. The brand is organic Maple Brown Sugar granola contains 13 grams of added sugar per 2/3 cup portion. Even 1 cup of it Hearty morning fiber flakes contains 10 grams of added sugar.

Try cutting the portion down to 1/3 cup and sprinkle it on top of plain Greek yogurt with nuts and fresh berries for a sugar-free breakfast.

Energy bar

It makes sense why you should reach for an energy bar for an increase in, well, energy! However, a bar must really contain 20 grams of added sugar as Clif Bar Chocolate Brownie make? It’s the same as two Original Glaze Donuts from Krispy Kreme! Think of a low-sugar alternative to help you stay energetic all day, or even one without sugar, e.g. Vital Proteins Performance Protein Bar.

Flavored instant oatmeal

Starting the day with a hearty bowl of oatmeal is a good idea, especially if you use steel-cut oats. Flavored oatmeal, on the other hand, is not always the most nutritious alternative. For example, a cup Earnest Eats Blueberry Chia Superfood Oatmeal Cups packaging 15 grams of sugar, the majority of which comes from cane sugar. Instead, add some steel-cut oats yourself and sweeten with cinnamon and a little maple syrup. Sprinkle chia seeds and fresh (or frozen!) Blueberries on top to recreate a more filling meal.
