Spain coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his unwavering confidence in Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, but did not disclose whether he would make his debut in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia. If he does feature in either that match or the one against Cyprus next Tuesday, Yamal would become Spain’s youngest ever player. De la Fuente praised Yamal’s abilities, stating that he appeared impressive on television and even better in person. The coach emphasized that Yamal is an important player for the team and that he has complete faith in his abilities.

With regards to the team’s qualifying campaign, Spain is determined to rectify their poor start. However, the preparations have been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the suspended federation president Luis Rubiales, who inappropriately kissed women’s team midfielder Jenni Hermoso. Despite the distractions, De la Fuente stated that the focus has solely been on the upcoming match against Georgia in order to put their qualification efforts back on track. Currently, Spain sits fourth in Group A, trailing leaders Scotland by nine points, although they have played two fewer matches.
