Sri Lanka extends state of emergency

In an emergency, the navy and police are given, amongst different issues, higher powers to arrest suspects.

It was on July 9 that ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa was pressured to flee when tens of hundreds of protesters stormed his residence within the capital, Colombo. Now two activists who’re suspected of getting participated in and led the demonstrations have been arrested.

The background to the demonstrations is widespread dissatisfaction among the many inhabitants after months of lengthy energy outages, file excessive inflation and shortages of meals and gasoline.
