Tottenham transfer news: Toby Alderweireld joins Al-Duhail

Tottenham have confirmed that Toby Alderweireld has joined Qatari side Al-Duhail.

Belgium has been a great servant for Spurs since moving to north London in 2015, continuing to make 174 Premier League appearances for the club and almost helping them to Champions League success in 2019.

The 32-year-old understood to have informed Tottenham earlier this summer of his desire to leave the club, and following the news of a potential move to Al-Duhail, Spurs have now gone to their official website to confirm that an agreement has been reached. .

“We have reached an agreement with Al-Duhail SC in Qatar for the transfer of Toby Alderweireld,” a statement read.

“The defender joined from Atletico Madrid in July 2015 and formed a strong central partnership with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen, the pair provided the backbone of our Champions League qualifiers in 2015/16 and our best defensive record in a Premier League campaign – 26 goals were released – on its way to second place 2016/17.

“He started both legs in the quarterfinals, semifinals and then the final of our 2018/19 Champions League run.

“Now 32 years old, Toby played 236 games in his six years at Spurs. He has also reached 113 international matches for Belgium and played in the World Cups 2014 and 2018 and the European Championships 2016 and 2020. We wish Toby all the best for the future.”

Spurs offered no news on how much they will receive from the sale of Alderweireld, although recent reports have suggested that a fee of £ 13 million had been agreed between the two teams.

The newly appointed Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo will now probably have additional means of transfer at his disposal when he looks to refresh the squad for next season.

Spurs are perceived to be in talks with a number of potential defensive arrivals including Cristian Romero and Takehiro Tomiyasu. 90min understands that Romero has told the current club Atalanta that he wants to join Tottenham and is anxious that an agreement will be reached as soon as possible.
