The Pape Matar Sarr deal is imminent

Tottenham are close to buying young midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, Metz president Bernard Sarin has confirmed.

Sarr has been tracked by a number of top European clubs since he came on stage last season with a number of exciting achievements. The 18-year-old made 22 Ligue 1 matches during the 2020/21 campaign and has started each of Metz’s first two matches in this campaign.

However, he may have played his last game for his boys’ club with Spurs close to agreeing a deal for his services. Reports had suggested that Tottenham would pay just € 15 million for Sarr and talk to Amazon (via Fabrizio Romano), Sarin seemed to confirm that the fee would be around this level.

“We are in advanced talks with Tottenham about Sarr, yes – but it has not been done yet. The final fee will be higher than 10 million euros, he says.

Sarr has great potential. Can play as a deep lying or advanced midfielder, he comes through a lot of defensive work and is also comfortable on the ball. He should soon be Spurs’ fourth signing of the summer after Bryan Gil, Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini.

There could be further deals, especially if Harry Kane leaves the club – even if Tottenham are determined to keep him.

Whether Sarr is in the first team in north London remains to be seen, but Spurs looks quality in midfield.

Tanguy Ndombele’s days at the club seem to be numbered after he was left out of the squad for each of his team’s first three season matches. A loan transaction seems most likely, although it can be difficult to find a suitor.

Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks also failed to impress when they were handed out in Spurs’ Europa Conference League defeat to Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday night.
