The best of Twitter from Wednesday’s Champions League action

And so this season’s quarterfinals in the Champions League end.

Two English sides came to the final four after Manchester City joined Chelsea in the semi-finals after an impressive 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, but it was not for Liverpool as they could not find a way past Real Madrid and were dumped out. 3-1 overall.

The first act of the night came out in Dortmund. Many people had Pep Guardiola’s side down as some semi-finalists after their 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium last week, although a young Englishman had other ideas when he fired the home side into an early lead.

What a finish from Jude Bellingham! ?

It’s his first #UCL goal and it’s so complex for a 17 year old …? pic.twitter.com/vMoYMmWcXJ

While Bellingham flourished in Dortmund, Liverpool’s front line did not have such a successful evening.

The Reds cut out their fair share of opportunities to open the scoring at home for Real Madrid and give a foothold in the tie, but they just did not seem to find a way through.

42 ‘Two great chances for the Reds. Salah and Gini can both not hit the target from the inside.

Now an even better chance. This time, Wijnaldum has his head in his hands. Should have buried it.

While Liverpool struggled to break down Real Madrid, City also did not have a comfortable evening as Dortmund camped in their own half in an attempt to maintain their narrow lead.

The home team proved to be disciplined and determined, but it only takes a weak link for the chain to fall apart …

No matter what the ever-changing rules are for decisions like this, it should definitely be a punishment just for how stupid Emre Can was trying to head a ball he could only have … kicked pic.twitter.com/Rhmd1REuUs

Emre Can has ruined this tie. Both legs he has done stupidity.

With Riyad Mahrez converting the resulting penalty, City stepped up overall and Dortmund began to float forward in search of an illusory goal to take the tie in extra time.

However, another special English talent decided that he would put his mark on the game after Bellingham had done the same thing before.

Phil Foden scores a decisive goal on the road for Man City! ?

I’ll tell you how good Phil Foden is.

When Kompany left, you heard his name every week because they did not replace him.

At the end of last season, probably City’s greatest player ever left the club, and I have not heard anyone say that City miss him. #BVBMCI

I would rather give @PhilFoden a salary increase instead of signing Haaland!

Over at Anfield, the clock ticked closer and closer to 90 minutes and it really did not look like for the home team.

Still, they at least absolutely hit a gut and gave it their all in an attempt to give themselves one last hope of progress to the last four.

Some of them were …

Wijnaldum makes lacing on the edge of the box during a 90-minute attack sums him up this season, the sooner he is away from the club the better. But he will tweet “We go again next week” after the match and Klopp will start him again every time.

Wijnaldum makes his lacings in the last third of an attack just summing him up perfectly

– Harry? (@lfchxrry) April 14, 2021

Wijnaldum tied his strings more times tonight (1) than he had important passes (0).

Influential.
